OUR HISTORY

The Barkers Point Lions Club , sponsored by the Marysville Lions Club, was formed in July 1957 with 23 Charter members.

The first meetings were held in the Women's Institute Hall and later the Lions moved to an old building ( more like a shed they say ) on Carman  Avenue. A few years later the building was sold and thanks to all the hard work done by Lions members a new club hall was built on the property in 1971. Over the years many improvements were made and this hall played an important part of the community until the fall of 2004 when as a result of several factors the Lions members felt they could no longer keep it in operation.

The first major project for the Lions was to build playground equipment for the school. Over the winter months Lions worked on this and then placed it at the school in the early spring. They helped to build and maintain an outdoor ice rink in the community and hockey became another sport for them to sponsor.

The early years had Lions selling light bulbs door to door, holding raffles, and hosting community day events to raise funds. In the 60's the club became the owners of the Barkers Point Speedway, a stockcar track. During the 70's the racetrack began to slump so it was sold and Bingo became the major fundraiser until the spring of 2004.

Over the years Lions have supported Seniors Projects, Girl Guides & Scouting, kindergarten, youth activities, playgrounds and the local schools along with a huge variety of community needs and events.

Some of the clubs largest donations have been to the Barkers Point School for a library, CNIB, CRCD, an ambulance for the DECH and to the Lions Mobile Vision Unit. During the flood of 73 with the water almost up to the front door the Lions served food to those working to protect our homes and property.

Our club has always been there for many in times of need.

We dedicate this page to all the Lions who have come before us and made lasting impressions on our club.

Thanks to you we will continue "To Serve"
